Gender-neutral is big in the baby world. It doesn’t necessarily mean all monochrome and no pink or blue. More that every colour is for every child. No labelling.

It’s also highly practical if you’re not planning on finding out the gender of your baby. Or planning on having more than one child everything can be passed down to any future siblings.

Creative independent brands, many started by parents who haven’t been able to find clothes they’d like to dress their offspring in, have paved the way and contrary to popular opinion, many are very affordable.

But the high street has caught up, especially with the introduction of baby wear to popular shops including Arket and Cos who do unisex basics brilliantly both instore and online.

We looked for inspiring brands that offer unisex collections not just a few pieces that either gender could wear added on.

We’ve considered the size of the ranges, value for money, clever new ideas (such as products that grow with children using turn-ups etc, thank you Anyware) and sustainability and have included brands with different styles from cool monochrome hipster pieces to bold, bright fun clothes and more natural, muted softer collections that are younger baby focused yet genderless. There’s something to suit every style…

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers , but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.
