There’s nothing like a warm wool rug on a cold winter morning. Rugs have almost magical qualities when it comes to transforming a home: as well as bringing warmth and cosiness to any room, they add style, personality, colour and character, and can help protect wooden or tiled floors too.

In our search, we’ve included a range of options from thick shaggy rugs with neutral colours to show-stopping statement pieces.

Our selection includes a range of budgets, from those under £25, to those that will be a lifetime investment.

There are also a range of sizes here, to suit you whether you’re looking for something to cover most of the floor, or just want a small, cosy rug for under a desk.

Cream and brown Berber rug: £115, Rose & Grey

Moroccan-style Berber rugs have been having a moment for quite some time now, and the trend is showing no signs of abating. If you haven’t managed to haggle for one in a Marrakech souq, you can find a great alternative in the form of this cream and brown hand-knotted rug from homeware company Rose & Grey. Made with beautifully soft wool and cotton, the rug has a thick, shaggy feel, and the brown zigzags are a warmer alternative to the ubiquitous black and cream combination so beloved on Instagram. We loved the thick wool, cute fringed ends and trendy Berber style, and found it to be excellently priced for the one large size available: 120cm x 180cm.

Kitty Joseph x Floor Story chroma rug: from £1,160, Floor_Story

Bring every colour of the rainbow into your home with this eye-catching, hand-tufted wool rug. Made as part of a collaboration between London-based womenswear designer Kitty Joseph and east London rug company Floor_Story, the chroma rug was inspired by still-life photography and the look of a pleated skirt. It is available in five sizes and three colours, including one with a greyer tone for a more pared-back appearance and another more pastel-tinted one for a subtler look – but our favourite was the bold and bright chroma primary. With its electrifying colours and fun round shape, it will bring a sense of character to any home. It’s certainly not cheap, but feels soft and looks great, and is sure to spark conversation.

Enjoy orange rug: from £125, Woven

We enjoyed getting lost in British online rug specialist Woven’s vast selection of rugs, but our favourite had to be the bold and bright enjoy orange rug. Made of 100 per cent wool, the rug is handwoven in India, and has a thinner pile than the others on this list, making it ideal if you’re not a fan of thick wool rugs. We adored the quirky colour combination, which give it plenty of personality, and found the quality of the pile excellent. If you’re not a fan of orange but like the design, there’s a more muted option in blue. It comes in three sizes.
