Tom Hanks surprises SNL viewers in first TV appearance after coronavirus diagnosis

Saturday Night Live will return for a second remote episode, after a successful SNL at Home instalment during the coronavirus pandemic.

The announcement was made on Thursday via social media.

SNL’s official Twitter account simply shared the words “We’re back this Saturday”, along with a video of the cast reuniting via video chat.

Viewers will be able to tune in as usual on NBC at 11.30pmET/8.30pm PT. Highlights and skits are expected to be posted on YouTube later on as is usually the case.

The names of the episode’s host and musical guest have yet to be revealed.

SNL’s first at-home episode aired on 11 April after the coronavirus crisis forced the show to halt production.

Tom Hanks surprised viewers by taking on hosting duties.

“Ever since being diagnosed, I have been more like America’s dad than ever before,” the actor, who tested positive for Covid-19 along with his wife Rita Wilson, told viewers.

Chris Martin stepped in as the musical guest for the evening.

SNL was forced to halt production in March as lockdown measures were put into place.

John Krasinski was scheduled to host the show for the first time on 28 March with Dua Lipa as a musical guest, but that never materialised due to the production shutdown.
