When photographer Callie Shell met Illinois State Senator Barack Obama, she knew there was something special about him.

After covering seven presidential campaigns, she didn’t realise she was soon to become friends with the next president of America.

Callie’s relationship developed with the couple as the Obamas journey grew from their family home in Chicago to the most powerful house in the United States.

She would often swap stories about their families and share tips about life on the road.

Hope, Never Fear features the many facets of Barack Obama – legislator, candidate, family man, leader – that she captured in his years as a senator, presidential candidate, and the first African-American President of the United States.

You can purchase Hope, Never Fear: A Personal Portrait of the Obamas (Chronicle Books, £17.99), here
