Oscars 2019: Green Book wins best picture

Green Book has won the Oscar for best picture at the 91st Academy Awards, with producer Charles B Wessler dedicating the victory to Star Wars actor Carrie Fisher.

Wessler had known Fisher since the early Eighties, having acted as a production assistant for George Lucas on The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. He later produced the short film From Here to Maternity, which starred Fisher.

The pair have been pictured together on multiple occasions since then, including at the premiere of Dumb and Dumber To, which Wessler produced.

Green Book's Best Picture victory proved a huge upset as the film beat Roma, The Favourite, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star Is Born, and Vice.

The comedy-drama won three Golden Globes earlier this year, despite causing controversy after the family of Mahershala Ali's Don Shirley complained that the film inaccurately portrayed the Jazz pianist.

Earlier in the evening, Rami Malek took home Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody while Ali won Best Supporting Actor. Regina King won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in If Beale Street Could Talk.
