Scottish writer Irvine Welsh has provided some light relief for followers feeling glum about self-isolating during Mother's Day.

The Trainspotting novelist shared an anecdote about visiting his own mother to deliver a card (he noted he maintained a safe distance from her).

"Decided to ditch public transport and walked 7 miles to hand deliver a Mother’s Day card," he wrote. "I couldn’t go in but we spoke at distance, her from her front door.

"She looked at my red trainers and said “you walked seven miles in these? Just as well the streets are empty.”

Welsh then shared a photo of the offending trainers, commenting: "My mum might just have a point. Maybe."

"Mothers are a great leveller," one of Welsh's followers quipped, while others went for the joke: "Trainerspotting."

Welsh's latest novel, Dead Men's Trousers, was published in 2018.
